Notes on Steven Cohoon
"Stephen Cohoon, age 54, born NY, appeared on the 1850 census of Jasper County, IL with Margaret, age 29, born NY, and George, age 15, born OH. Two real estate transactions recorded for Stephen, one on 10 Mar 1843, and one on 29 Mar 1845,indicate he was in Jasper County by 1843. A Stephen P. Cohoon and a Stephen Cohoon were in Delaware Co, OH in 1840, as was Reuban Matheny. Stephen's son married Sarah Methany on 23 Jul 1857. The 1860 census shows that Sarah, age 19… Continue

Passes Away After An Illness Lasting a Few Months
April 27, 1916
While it had been generally known that John Cohoon had been in poor health for some time the announcement of his death last Monday forenoon came as a great shock to the community.
Mr. Cohoon left here last fall for Oklahoma, in the most robust health and had been there but a short time when he was afflicted with a disease which was diagnosed as hardening of the arteries. After remaining there for some time in a vain hope that he might recover he returned to his home south of Shepherd about two weeks ago.
Since his regturn he had been able to get around quit a little and had been in Shepherd once. He arose last Monday morning and seemed to be in better health than at any time since his return. After eating quite a hearty breakfast he sat and visited with his mother for some time and then remarked that he guessed he would lay down and sleep for awhile as he had not rested very well during the night. He slept quite peacefully for about an hour and when next they noticed him he had passed peacefully into the eternal sleep.
Mr. Cohoons life has been such that his departure will be deeply felt by a large circle of friends. He had a character and personality that won him the confidence and respect of all with whom he come in contact and it may be truly said of him that he never betayed this confidence.
He was a amember of both the Odd Fellow and Masonic Lodges of Shepherd and had done much toward the prosperity of both these organizations. The day of the funeral, which will be conducted by the Odd Fellows, has not been definitely settled as yet as they are waiting to hear from relatives at a distance.
After we get to know the site and put informaton on it then will start to invite other to look and join.
