"Stephen Cohoon, age 54, born NY, appeared on the 1850 census of Jasper County, IL with Margaret, age 29, born NY, and George, age 15, born OH. Two real estate transactions recorded for Stephen, one on 10 Mar 1843, and one on 29 Mar 1845,indicate he was in Jasper County by 1843. A Stephen P. Cohoon and a Stephen Cohoon were in Delaware Co, OH in 1840, as was Reuban Matheny. Stephen's son married Sarah Methany on 23 Jul 1857. The 1860 census shows that Sarah, age 19, was born in Ohio. George's second marriage on 13 Feb 1883, gave his parents' names as Stephen Cohoon and Peggy Cole, so perhaps the 29-year-old Margaret in Stephen's household was his wife, possibly a second wife. The probate file packets for both Stephen Cohoon and John Methany are missing from the probate box in the Jasper County Courthouse."
"Stephen P. Cohoon was my G-G-grandfather.
He was born in Apr 20, 1819 in Pennsylvania, died Jun 2 1879 in Linn County Missouri. His wife was Nancy Jones. She was born about 1824 in New York, died in 1874 in Linn County, Missouri. They were married Jun 8, 1839 in Delaware County Ohio. They had 8 children that I know about, the first 6 were born in Delaware County, Ohio. another daughter born in 1856 in Indiana, and an infant son born and died 1861 in Linn county Missouri. Could Stephen P. possibly be the son of the Stephen born 1796 and could Margaret be sister of Stephen P.??"
"It looks very much as if your Stephen could be from the same family. There were four Cohoon families in the Northford Precinct in Jasper County, IL in 1850: (#401) Cornelius Cohoon, 21, born in Ohio, with wife Mary, 18, and daughters Gracy, 2 and Palmira, age 1, all born in Ohio. (#447) Joseph Cohoon, age 20, born in Pennsylvania, with wife Rebecka, 23 , born in Virginia, and Mary A., 4, born in IL. (#448) Stephen Cohoon, 54, born in New York, with Margaret, age 29, born in New York and George [my daughter-in-law's ancestor], age 15, born in Ohio. (#449)Charles Cohoon, age 20, born in Pennsylvania, wife Hannah, age 17, born in IL and Julia A., age 1 year. It appears as through Charles and Joseph were twins, and Martha could certainly have been "Old" Stephen's daughter instead of his wife. This is really all the information I have on the early families. Do you know anything more about the earlier families? I'm really excited about this--they certainly do look like a match, don't they?"
"Would you know of any brothers or sisters of Stephen P Cohoon I Belive The P. is for Palaski... I have a James Cohoon Born in 1814 NY came west with parents to PA. OH. area Parents are suppose to be Stephen Cohoon & Margaret Cole.. James married Palmyra Baird or Beards in Delaware Co. Any help would me greatly appreciated."
"I think I have something on this Stephen Cohoon of Ill. and think he may be in my husband's family as there is a missing Stephen and the date fits. He would have been one of 8 sons and 3 daughters of Josph Cohoon and Nancy Parr of Haverstraww, N.Y. later moved to Syracuse area. 7 sons and 2 daughters came to Michigan. According to Orville Calhoun's research, he went to Canada but he never turned up in any family in his books. I'll look up what I have and semd it but probably won't get to it uti after Monday. Rose Cohoon"
"I just received a message from Roy Cohoon, forwarded from Richard Cohoon which shows page 773 from a history of Sauk County, Wisconsin [I don't have the title page] "James Cohoon, farmer, Sec. 25; P. O. Reedsburg, son of Stephen and Margaret (Cole) Cohoon, born in the State of New York Sept. 2, 1814; while quite young went to Erie Co., Penn., with his parents, and from there to Delaware Co., Ohio. He was married March 2, 1835, to Palmyra, daughter of Victor and Mary E. (Potter) Baird; she was born in Orange Co., N. Y.; they had twelve children...". This proves that the Magaret shown on the 1850 census of Jasper County had to be Stephen's daughter, not his wife. Your Stephen would definitely have fit into this family like a glove. Please send me the details of your Stephen's family, and I'll send what I have on the descendants of Stephen's youngest child, his son, George W. Cohoon--my daughter-in-law's line."
